Petite’s Birthday Extravaganza

I just don’t even know where to begin this post. Petite’s birthday celebration was amazing because we celebrated the first 365 days of her life. It was overwhelming – with out of town guests, a large family guest list, a DIY list as long as my arm, AND Easter – the celebration seemed to last for 3 non-stop days. I’m certainly not complaining — it was a celebration of life that was overflowing with love.

Just please excuse the pictures.

Seriously.

My pride as a mother and a photographer is bruised by the lack of quality photographic evidence of all the wonderfulness that happened that weekend.

So bruised, in fact, that I wasn’t going to share at all.

Then I went on a little hiatus. Contemplated giving up the blog all together. Found my big girl panties in the laundry room and, well, here we are.

Thursday : The decorations start to go up. This? The only image I have of the countless yards of crepe paper I sewed into ruffles and the beginnings of the precious entry table all set up with the favors.

My insanely talented friend Maria created the chalkboard art. She’s amazing.

The cake, after two batched of botched swiss meringue buttercream, is finished.

Friday morning, the Birthday Girl in her bib Uncle G bought her. ::love::

Friday, dinner: pizza and champagne at Jojo and Douxie’s. Carrying on the tradition from my first birthday! We also had a “rainbow” cake – white cake with rainbowed fillings.

A big wagon and a petite wagon!

We practiced clapping to “Happy Birthday” for a month ahead of time. Everyone was surprised when she “knew” the song. I know — she’s brilliant.

Mmmmmmm. Cake.

Saturday, bright and early. Party started at 11. Nap time be dammed next year – it’s gonna be in the afternoon!

Lots of carnival food for the party! I collected the containers for months whenever I’d see them!

Gold cake balls and pink cupcakes with chevron washi tape flags.

Rock candy and sixlets.

The cake and dessert table.

Birthday girl lost her headband and cardi somewhere along the way. It was an insanely cute outfit, though. She was perfectly content to go from Aunt to Cousin to Friend the entire party.

Jojo made batch after batch of cotton candy.

The ONE and ONLY picture I have of the three of us from that day. Le sighn

I think that first birthday parties are really for the adults. It’s like a “Hey! We did it! We’re still alive, she’s still alive! Let’s celebrate!” party… Next year? We’ll have beer and cupcakes at the park. Everyone is invited…

Ps – Thanks LMG, Jojo, FMG and everyone else who passed my camera around all day to get me SOME images from the three days! I appreciate you! xo

Amanda these are adorable! What a fun and sweet carnival themed Birthday party! I love all the details so much! Bravo!!

Oh, don’t quit the blog! The party looks fun and beautiful and full of family and love – which is pretty much everything you could ever ask for, right? :)

I think the party looks perfect! I was such a stress case for the first party, but things get more and more relaxed every year!

What a great party! I LOVE the theme!

A Super Handy Giveaway

FMG and I celebrated our 7th Anniversary on Monday. Seven years of Honey-Do lists, Saturday chore charts and projects that take a gazillion years to get done. Ok – SOME projects that take a gazillion years to get done. Just like running a business, I think it’s important to outsource some parts of the household to make our marriage a better one. I’m not ashamed to admit that we leave the pool care to someone who knows what he’s doing (and will regularly do it!) and I get some help keeping my house clean (best money we’ve spent on our marriage EVER!). When I heard about BC Builds, I thought it wasn’t a resource I needed to keep in my back pocket — until I realized just how many of my “Honey-Do” projects could get knocked out with their services! They do big and little jobs – and if you’ve ever tried to find someone to do a little job, you know how hard it can be!

Field Trip to Bakery Lorraine

I originally posted this over on the ARG Photo blog, but I wanted to share it here, too! If you haven’t stopped by, PLEASE do — and give yourself time to sit and enjoy the front porch or garden. It will make your heart sing!

Just like in any other job, stepping out of your comfort zone to do something creative is refreshing to me. I took a break from the families and headed to one of my favorite San Antonio locations – Bakery Lorraine. (Which, by the way, was just named the NUMBER ONE new bakery in the US!) I was just tagging along with Misha – but I got some fabulous shots and thoroughly enjoyed my time shooting in one of my favorite places.

All that goodness just waiting to fill my, I mean, someone’s tummy! The smell of fresh croissants, tarts, macarons (yes! Just one “o”. Look it up.), muffins and coffee and tea will just about knock you over its so amazing.

I just love a good, broken in muffin tin. And just in case you need a few dozen muffins…

Don’t you love seeing someone who just LOVES what they do? I do. It’s fabulous!

That red bean cream? I wanted to steal it and go sit in the garden out back with it and a spoon and some solitude. Yup. It’s that good.

Anne and Jeremy are a hoot – and it was fun to make Jeremy get out of his comfort zone a little, too – we made him sprinkle flour over and over and over. The consummate pastry expert — he was just worried about over flouring the croissant dough.

I mean, seriously. It makes my mouth water.

Seriously, one of the coolest “field trips” I’ve ever been on. And now it’s just fun to know what the backside of my favorite bakery looks like.

Suuuuuure, Amanda. Make me look at all that goodness twice now that I don’t live anywhere near Bakery Lorraine anymore ;)

As I was searching for San Antonio lifestyle blogs, I found yours. I live right near Bakery Lorraine. Sooo good! Soo happy to have found your blog!

The Good List // Mother’s Day Gifts

Hello, good girls! Mother’s Day is sneaking up on us rather quickly, doesn’t it feel like? I sometimes miss the days where my teacher would have a craft ready for me to make and take home on the appropriate Friday to gift to mom over the weekend. I always loved the my mom LOVED whatever crap – I mean CRAFT – I brought home. And you know? SHe STILL loves all the crafty-crap I make her. So this year, craft grown up style for you mom – and it’ll be anything BUT crap!

As a teacher, one of my favorite mother’s day gifts to create with my students was a small flower pot filled with whatever flowers I could talk the local landscaping stores into giving me for free – with a card about blossoming or watching me grow, what mom could resist the cuteness? One year in college, I painted Jojo some flower pots and actually planted flowers in them. She still has the pots and I love this updated and au currant version of a painted terra-cotta pot:

These “drip pots” via Clever Nest take literally no time at all and would be darling with the color block pots:

Have you seen the amazing DIY Cake Plates that are all over? Maybe it’s because I have a deep love for cake plates (As in, I collect them. When we travel. Ask FMG how many he’s hand carried back from various trips. Sweet man.) but delivered with sweets on top, how could this be a bad gift? Also, this is a perfect updated gift for all of those ‘second’ moms in your life.

I love that the “face” of the plate was preserved on this thrift store find via Rambling Renovators:

Have a momma that likes drama? This confectionary tower via Shanty 2 Chic is just right for cupcakes, flowers or candles. I wouldn’t mind having one!

This amazing pie and tart tin creation would be perfect doubled as a counter organizer or in mom’s studio or office for supplies.

What mom wouldn’t love to get a love letter in the mail every month? Across town or across the country, this is a winner! Collect some cute printable quotes and happy-sayings (I KNOW you have some pinned already – if not search “printable quote” and you’ll find a gazillion). Decorate a frame and mail mom the frame with the first thoughtfully selected printable. Then, at the beginning of the month, mail her a new insert. Would also be precious for pictures of grandbabies (human or furry kind) or pictures of you and mom.

These world map frames are simple and perfect for the mom who loves to travel (or who’s family is spread out all over!). Be sure to take into account how large the glass or opening is when you’re printing mom’s inserts.

A quick trip to the scrapbooking and embellishing section of any craft store and you’d be hard pressed to NOT find something perfect for your frame. A little paint, and voila!

Delia Created made this frame wreath for her front door and, with the glass inside ,it would be a darling display for your love letters to mom.

So get crafty, glam girls! Mom will love it because it is from your hands and took your time… and besides, it’s totally better than the crap crafts you brought home from school.

Head over to The Wardrobe Code and check out the amazing style  Nicole is showing ,perfectly capturing the icons of style we grew up loving – our mommas.

I love the frame with the monthly notes!

What a sweet roundup! Each year we look so forward to showering our moms with homemade loveliness. The best kind of gifts!

The Good List // A Perfect Margarita

Hey, y’all! It’s Fiesta time in San Antonio right now. Two-ish weeks of parties, parades, festivals, and good food – it’s kind of a big deal (look it up!). And not that we need a reason to drink more margaritas here in the land of Tex-Mex and ‘ritas the size of your head, but Fiesta, followed closely by Cinco de Mayo, is the perfect reason to break out the limes and tequila and get your margarita recipe perfected for the long hot, Texas summers. Lucky you, I’m sharing our secret family recipe today for the PERFECT margarita. Seriously. Of all the margaritas (and wine-aritas and everclearitas) I’ve had, this is by far my MOST favorite. It’s the PERFECT combination of sweet, tart, and bite.

This recipe works just as good for a pitcher or a single  - just adjust your measuring container. Also, don’t you dare, for one moment, consider using anything but real lime juice. I mean it. The margarita police will come to your door and revoke your margarita drinking privileges.

What goes in:

  • One part each
    • lime juice
    • triple sec
    • tequila
  • HALF a part
    • agave syrup

Shake over ice and pour into a glass with fresh ice. Garnish with lime wedge or twist.

I prefer Patron Silver in my margaritas – please don’t use the really cheap stuff. Why even bother? Also, this makes a perfect frozen margarita, too! Just blend with plenty of ice. If I’m letting someone else clean up the mess, I love a salted rim on my glass. Otherwise, I spare myself the extra step and enjoy sans-salt.

Head over to the fabulous Nicole at the Wardrobe Code and see her take on margarita inspired couture — perfect for your Cinco de Mayo celebration!

Mmmm….that’s exactly the way I like my margarita. I’ve never tried the agave because I have a real affinity for citrus and sour – but I might give it a go next time! We use Don Julio Anejo here…agreed that there is no room for cheap tequila in life – especially once I hit the big 3-0.
